Feminized cannabis seeds produce only female plants, revolutionizing the market in the seed bank industry. Until their introduction, seeds contained both male and female genes.

The method that allows for the isolation and preservation of these female genes gives almost complete certainty (99.9%) that they will produce female plants. These are the plants that later produce buds, i.e., the marijuana of a particular cannabis strain. This is also where the significantly higher valuation of female marijuana seeds among those collecting seeds for their private collections comes from. Therefore, feminized marijuana seeds have become very valuable, especially among seed collectors. On the GanjaFarmer.com website, we present a wide selection of feminized seeds.

What are feminized marijuana seeds?

In the past in the Netherlands, people cultivated cannabis seeds that gave a similar amount of female and male plants. Half of them were thus discarded - marijuana growers are usually only interested in female plants.

In the 1990s, feminized marijuana seeds were invented, which in at least 95% of cases give female marijuana plants. Therefore, the cost of buying Indian hemp seeds has practically halved. Feminized marijuana seeds are the most sought-after collector's product on the market. The first feminized marijuana seeds were sold by the company Dutch Passion. The feminization of marijuana seeds used principles of genetics that are practically characteristic of all organisms. Naturally, in the environment, every species has both male and female X and Y individuals. These are called sex chromosomes. To develop more female specimens, it is necessary to feminize marijuana seeds. So, what is this whole process in which female cannabis is obtained?

What does feminizing marijuana seeds involve?

Feminized seeds are created in the so-called feminization process. It involves forcing a female plant to produce male pollen, which then pollinates other female plants, and in this way, new seeds are created. Seeds obtained in this way produce exclusively female plants. In 99% of cases, they do not produce male flowers, i.e., pollen-filled egg sacs. Female specimens are much more desired than males.

How do feminized seeds differ from regular seeds?

Feminized Indian hemp seeds differ from regular seeds primarily in the gender of the plants that grow from them. From regular seeds, statistically 50% of male and 50% of female individuals grow. Sometimes this proportion is skewed one way or the other, depending on the entire breeding process and the individual character of the marijuana strain. It is common to find cannabis strains, or rather specific batches of seeds that produce, for example, 70% female plants and 30% male, or vice versa. The feature of regular seeds is the possibility of simple production of new seeds without specialized equipment or knowledge. People who collect seeds to preserve the diversity of this unique plant buy seeds with the thought of widespread legalization of marijuana in the near future. In such a case, male and female seeds can have their advantages because they will allow for easy reproduction of many Indian hemp species.

On the other hand, feminized seeds give predominantly female individuals. From the perspective of someone who collects cannabis seeds, it is better to choose feminized seeds because they are more popular. Feminized marijuana seeds are more desired due to their higher monetary value and the possibility of later reselling their collection with greater profit. Collectors definitely value feminized seeds more because this product has a much better reputation in the cannabis industry. If, however, you would like to reproduce a marijuana species a few years after legalization and do not want to use chemicals, then choose regular seeds.

What is the difference between feminized seeds and autoflowering seeds?

The difference is huge. First of all, let's start with the fact that it is mistakenly accepted to call full-season seeds, feminized seeds. You should know that feminization is a breeding method used to influence the gender of plants, while autoflowering, or automatic flowering, is a type of flowering. Therefore, these two things should not be compared at all.

Feminized seeds come in both automatically flowering versions (i.e., feminized autoflowering seeds, abbreviated: Auto Fem, or Autofem) and normally flowering versions in response to the photoperiod (i.e., full-season feminized seeds or photoperiod feminized seeds). Both will be feminized, i.e., they will produce 99% female cannabis plants, but will differ in the way they bloom.

And what are the aforementioned autoflowering seeds? Well, autoflowering seeds are those that produce cannabis plants that flower automatically. Autoflowering seeds can occur in both feminized versions (already mentioned Auto Fem), and in regular versions, i.e., as regular autoflowering seeds (Auto Reg), which flower automatically and produce both male and female individuals.

The latter type of seeds (Auto Regular) is so rarely found in seed bank offers that it has practically been omitted in all divisions of marijuana seed types. This fact, combined with the decreasing popularity of regular seeds and the simultaneously increasing popularity of autoflowers, has led to the erroneous division into feminized and autoflowering seeds.

Let's return to our question. Since this shorthand has become so widespread and the largest companies divide their seeds into Automatic and Feminized, let us explain what they mean. So, what is the difference between feminized seeds and autoflowering seeds?

“Feminized seeds” are full-season (photoperiodic) seeds that produce only female plants and bloom classically in response to the photoperiod (outdoors in the fall, and under lamps with a 12-hour lighting time). They are large plants that can have a very wide range in flowering time and sizes depending on the seed variety.

On the other hand, “automated seeds” are also feminized seeds that produce female plants but bloom automatically, regardless of day length or season, and their biological clock decides to start flowering based on the age of the plant. These are smaller plants that mature faster and are suitable for outdoor cultivation in virtually every corner of the globe. Summarizing the answer to our question, the main difference between autoflowers and feminized seeds is the way of flowering.
